On March 14, Ukraine will present a national pavilion at the first Malta Biennale. The project is called From South to North. It belongs to the artist Alevtina Kakhidze. Suspilne reported it.

The project covers the topic of decolonization and reflection on the imperial past against the backdrop of the Russian-Ukrainian war. It symbolically unites Malta and Odessa. The From South to North pavilion sets the perspective of looking from Malta to Ukraine, from South to North: in this optic, Odessa is considered “not as the south of the Russian empire, but as the north of the Mediterranean region .”

In particular, Kakhidze presented a video work shot in Odessa in early 2024 in collaboration with artist Roman Khimei, as well as installations created specifically for the pavilion space.

“In the mirror of his own family history, the artist studies how empire destroys the lives of different generations and how this sometimes invisible influence emerges over time. Kakhidze overlays the history of his own family in the events of the 20th century in Ukraine and Europe, creating a connection to the 21st century: the storyline continues the story of the artist’s personal experience during the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine ,” the press release said.

We remind you that earlier the street artist Banksy illegally exhibited his installation at the Venice Biennale. It was called Venice in Oil.
