If you’re new to the “One Piece” universe, discover what the powerful ‘akuma no mi’ are, presented during the franchise
One of Netflix’s main hits released in 2023 was the live-action adaptation of “One Piece”, a universe created by Eiichiro Oda through the manga in 1997, and which became known worldwide thanks to its anime, which debuted in 1999, and now has more than a thousand episodes.
The plot, which follows the adventures of Luffy and the Straw Hat gang, also received new admirers after the debut of the new series. Many people, not knowing the story presented in the comics or cartoons, may end up being confused by some concepts presented in the franchise, such as the famous “akuma no mi”.
But you don’t need to worry. If you are new to the world of “One Piece”, and you still don’t know what akuma no mi are, RECREIO explains it to you!
Fruits with powers?
Devil fruits, also known as devil fruits, are responsible for giving supernatural abilities to the characters featured in the plot. In total, there are approximately 132 catalogued fruits, responsible for providing different powers, which grow in different parts of the world, however, no two are alike.
Therefore, it is impossible for two people to use the same fruit in the same era. The akuma no mi only reappears after its last user dies, and it can take years, or even centuries, for this to happen. Likewise, during the “Water 7” arc, it is explained that it is extremely dangerous to eat a second dose of the fruit, which could lead to death.
Just like real-life plants, akuma no mi are also divided into some categories. Among them, we have Paramecia, which is the most common, where, generally, the abilities provided by it modify the user’s body; Logia, which is the rarest and most powerful, capable of making a person create, control or transform themselves into elements of nature; and Zoan, responsible for allowing the user to transform into different animals, or vice versa. It is also the only one that has some variations, divided into three subcategories. Are they:
- Ancestral: gives the user the ability to transform into any extinct animal, in addition to providing much more strength;
- Mythic: the user receives the power of mythical creatures, such as a dragon;
- Artificial: Created artificially in the laboratory, they allow the user to permanently acquire the characteristics of an animal.
Despite having numerous qualities, the powers have one major problem: water. If the user falls into the water, they will lose the ability to move, sinking like a stone. Additionally, certain characters may lose their abilities just by touching small droplets.
