Following the abdication of his mother, Margrethe II, Frederik X was proclaimed King of Denmark this Sunday, January 14. Greeted by supporters during his first appearance on the balcony, he kissed his wife, Queen Mary.
“Today is Sunday, January 14, 2024. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II has abdicated (…) Long live His Majesty King Frederik X,” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in front of 100,000 people. The new king in military uniform, accompanied by his wife and four children, Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabelle, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, received long applause from their faithful. The couple then shared a lavish kiss in front of the crowd.

The new king of Denmark was very emotional, wiping a few tears from his face when he appeared on the balcony. Cannon salutes were also fired in his honor. “I will need all the support I can get from my lovely wife, my family, you and the elder of us. I look to the future with the confidence that I am not alone,” he declared. He succeeds his 83-year-old mother, who reigned in the country for 52 years.
