‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Prevents Box Office Competition

Switch to Maverick, get down the dinosaurs to get their throne.

On Sunday, the studio estimated that “Jurassic World: Dominion” sold North American tickets at the box office for $ 143.4 million. Along with revenues from international screenings – the film was released in various markets last week – “Jurassic World: Dominion,” released worldwide by Universal Pictures, already has revenues of $ 389 million. And this is just the beginning.

“We couldn’t be happier,” said Jim Two, Universal’s Chief Distribution Officer. “Jurassic World: Dominion had a huge and funny enthusiastic audience.”

Solid growth is another sign that the box office continues to return this summer. With hits like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”, “Top Gun: Maverick” and now “Jurassic World 3”, viewers are returning to theaters more consistently.

The film, valued at $ 185 million, not including marketing and advertising costs, was released on 4,676 screens in the United States and Canada, starting with a premiere on Thursday. According to Universal, 56% of viewers are male and 54% are over the age of 25.

Critics disagreed with Dino Extravaganza, but viewers seemed to like the exit polls. Viewers gave him an A-CinemaScore and an 81% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that word of mouth will be strong in the coming weeks.

“You want to see dinosaurs on the big screen, no matter what the critics think,” said Paul Dergarebedian, a media analyst at Comscore.

And many viewers opted for larger screens. Worldwide, the “Jurassic World: Dominion” IMAX display is worth $ 25 million. The 3D format also accounts for approximately 25% of ticket sales worldwide.

“There is still a strong appetite for the big creatures in this franchise and viewers want to experience this film in 3D,” said Travis Reid, CEO and President of RealD.

Both “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Jurassic World: Dominion” are important warnings for the industry, which continues to learn new lessons each week about filmmaking during the pandemic. While both films are hereditary sequels, neither is a race of superheroes that has long seemed the only genre against pandemics.

“Top Gun: Maverick” is still in the skies: in the third weekend it dropped just 44% to about $ 50 million, ranking second, with North America totaling $ 393.3 million. “Dr. The Strange 2” was in third place on the sixth weekend with $ 4.9 million.

This weekend is only the third since the pandemic season, in which the total box office total exceeded $ 200 million, according to box office tracker Comscore. Others are “Spider Man: No Way Home” in December and “Doctor Strange 2” in May. But this is the first time the two films have performed well.

“Almost every big successful weekend we have as a result of the pandemic is dominated by a movie,” Dergarebedian said. “In this case, we have two big hits in theaters at the same time. It’s a recipe for success that theater owners are waiting for during the pandemic. It’s an important stage”.

“Dominion,” a co-production of Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment, is the third film in the “Jurassic World” trilogy, which began in 2015 and features characters from Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The final part features actors Laura Dern, Sam Neil and Jeff Goldblum From Jurassic Park in 1993 by Steven Spielberg.

Colin Trevorow Who directed the “World” trilogy and directed the first film, returns to the director’s “Dominion”, where dinosaurs disappear and locusts threaten the world’s food supply.

The film’s creators say “Dominion” is set to be one of the last “Jurassic World” films to sell more than $ 3 billion in big, lucrative tickets. The first generated just over $ 1.7 billion worldwide. Along with the original Jurassic Park trilogy, that number climbs to $ 5 billion.

“Jurassic World 3” is expected to continue performing throughout the summer, the two said. Universal Pictures will also have several different, high-profile and unique theater shows in the coming weeks, including the horror film Black Phone, Minions: The Rise of Grus and No. And the expression of confidence in theaters is promising.

“This is a great start to our summer,” said the two.

According to Comscore, ticket sales are estimated Friday through Sunday in theaters in the U.S. and Canada. The final internal data will be published on Monday.

2. “Top Gun: Maverick”, $ 50 million.
