How did K-pop lightsticks come about?

Have you ever wondered where K-Pop’s famous glow sticks came from? We explain it to you!

If you’ve just started following K-pop, you must have been confused when you first saw fans from different groups holding glow sticks at events, with different colors and designs. But there’s no need to worry, Recreio explains everything about these items that are so popular among admirers of South Korean pop music.

Lightsticks

These glow sticks are known as lightsticks, and serve as a way for fans to show support for their favorite artists, illuminate shows, and make idols find their fans more easily at festivals, awards shows or other events.

But anyone who thinks they emerged along with K-pop is mistaken. These items, which are extremely popular today, first appeared on the South Korean pop music scene in the mid-2000s thanks to YG Entertainment’s group BIGBANG.

At the time, it was common for shows to be lit with generic light sticks distributed to fans. Although, G-Dragonthe leader of the group, decided that he would like to create an item exclusive to the boy group, with his own shape and color.

This is how “Bangbong” came about, BIGBANG’s official lightstick shaped like a yellow crown, and the design was developed by the idol himself.

Since then, several other artists have also started to develop their own lightsticks, as a way to more easily identify their fans in the crowd. The presence of this item has become so notable within K-pop that, nowadays, it is practically impossible to find an artist who doesn’t already have one.
