Viola Davis’ character can be seen in “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes”, a film that hits theaters in November
One of the new characters in the Hunger Games franchise will be inspired by Willy Wonka, from “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”, as revealed by the director Francis Lawrenceto People (viaADORCinema). The figure in question is Dr. Volumnia Gaul, a character played by the actress Viola Davisin “The Song of Birds and Serpents”.
The filmmaker said that the cruel and calculating scientist responsible for creating the experiments that make the Hunger Games even more violent over the years, has her characteristics derived from the first cinematic version of the story written by Roald Dahl released in 1971, where the chocolatier was played by the actor Gene Wilder.
There was this kind of wild, quirky creativity and joy that the character had, but with this kind of sinister underpinning. […] I have to admit, I was a little nervous telling her this reference. But she understood immediately, thankfully.”
More than the attributes related to personality, the inspiration also came from the costumes worn by the character. So much so, that the costume designer Trish Summerville he said that the biggest challenge was to bring to the looks the look that embraced, at the same time, a mad scientist, Willy Wonka and Dr. Frankenstein. Furthermore, the designers intended to make Davis’ costumes “very different” from the other characters, with colorful elements to make the look even more prominent.
Other points that stand out are hair and makeup, as the actress needs to use prosthetics and even contact lenses, as Davis suggested that the character have different colors in each of her eyes to illustrate the consequences of unsuccessful experiments designed by Dr. Volumnia Gaul. The hairdresser Nikki Gooley he also said that the 1940s was used as a reference for hairstyles.
It is worth remembering that “The Hunger Games: A Song of Birds and Snakes” is set 60 years before the events experienced by Katniss Everden (Jennifer Lawrence). The plot will follow Lucy Gray Baird, character from Rachel Zeglera tribute from District 12 who will be mentored by Coriolanus Snow (Tom Blyth), years before becoming the tyrannical president of Panem.
