Carol Bouquet. “When people tell me I look younger, it annoys me.”

Coming to terms with your age, refocusing on the essentials, combining fragility and freedom… The actress opens up to us about her journey through time.

Passing time

“If I could stay “stuck” at the age of 50, I would, but life is not like that. I am 66 years old and I accept them because I have no other choice. I even plan to celebrate my 70th birthday in style, including on the front page of the papers if they want me to. When people tell me I look younger, it annoys me. I claim my right to be tired, especially on set, where they sometimes forget I’m not 40 anymore. I want to act my age and not cheat myself by trying to find the person I will no longer be… On a more personal level, aging means suffering when the illness or death of loved ones occurs. But it also means experiencing great happiness, for example through new meetings or the arrival of grandchildren. »

Other times, other manners

“Cinema, and society in general, listens, presents and values women better. It is a positive revolution, even if today the world is walking on eggshells. Redundancies are intolerable, but speech is sometimes censored without reason. Relationships with others sometimes become more boring, less natural. But I understand the redundancies, which are undoubtedly necessary, at least in some countries, to fundamentally change the codes. Because in other countries, women’s rights are going backwards as democracy declines. When I was 20 years old, I thought that we and our children could live in a better world, but wars are everywhere. We don’t remember anything from history. It’s sad. »

Harden or soften over time

“Toughen up? Definitely not. It’s really amazing. When I was young, I had very thick chain mail. Today it’s lace. I feel more fragile, perhaps because carelessness disappears with youth.”

Aging is also that. less “external” constraints and more freedom to think only about yourself sometimes

Share your time

“I give time to painting, sculpting, walking and my grandchildren, with whom I spend one month a year in Italy… I would like to see them more, but my time is less organized today than when it was not there. my children were young. Aging also means: less “external” constraints and more freedom to think only about yourself sometimes. »
