One of the most striking magical objects in the Harry Potter saga is the Sorting Hat. The main function of the item is to define which of the four Hogwarts houses each student goes to, according to some requirements imposed by the founders of the school of magic and witchcraft.
But, did you know that the Sorting Hat might not exist in history? The person who revealed this was J.K. Rowlingthe author of the saga, in a note published on the official Harry Potter website, the Wizarding World.
The writer said that, at first, the magical object was not in her plans for Hogwarts, even though she knew that the school would have four houses, each with its own personality. Rowling he thought of several methods to select students between Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, but, until then, none of these ideas were the Sorting Hat.
She revealed that the first idea she had to divide the students was an “elaborate Heath Robinson-ish machine” (via Wizarding World), equipment that did several magical things before defining the wizard’s house. The author, however, did not like the idea and commented that “it seemed, at the same time, very complicated and very easy”.
Another idea of Rowling was that the choice was made with four statues, one of each founder of Hogwarts. This would take place in the castle’s entrance hall, where the sculptures would come to life and select the student from the crowd. Although the idea was better than the first, the author said it was still not enough.
That’s when she had an idea that ended up generating the Sorting Hat. Rowling he wrote:
Finally, I wrote a list of the ways people can be chosen: eeny meeny miny mo (the unidunitê in English-speaking countries), short straws, chosen by team captains, names from a hat — names from a talking hat — putting a hat — the Sorting Hat.”
