Experts are sure that Ukrainian cinema will not repeat the success of 2023 in the following years. The reason for this is the lack of government support.
In times of trials and challenges, when war becomes a very important context for society, Ukrainian cinema shows incredible strength and endurance. It not only lives in the face of difficult realities, but also breaks records, leaving a deep mark on history and modern cinematography. This was reported by Economic Truth.
In the first eight months of 2023, Ukrainian-made paintings collected UAH 192 million, which is 12 million UAH more than in 2019.
For example, Mavka. Fox’s song, released on March 2, became the highest-grossing Ukrainian film since independence with over 150 million. Only in the first week of release, the tape collected 25 million views, and after five weeks – almost 100 million.
The film directed by Antonio Lukic Luxembourg was also a box office success. Luxembourg, for the first weekend collected 5.5 million hryvnia.
According to FILM.UA Group CEO Viktoria Yarmoshchuk, after the outbreak of war, Ukrainian distribution resumed in June 2022, and by the end of the year, the share of Ukrainian films at the national box office reached an outstanding 27%, while before the war, this figure fluctuated between 4-7%.
By the end of August, after the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, the share of Ukrainian cinema dropped to 21%. However, today there is a release that will be able to increase the box office share of Ukrainian cinema. We are talking about the tape Dovbush, which for the first weekend of the rental collected 8.7 million Hryvnia.
It should also be noted that in Ukraine during the entire Russian invasion, 60 films were shown, while on February 24, 2022 this number is 160 films per year. However, the great war was not the only factor playing against the distribution of Ukrainian film. The actors’ and screenwriters’ strike in Hollywood also played a role.

It is worth noting that the premiere of the second part of the fantasy film directed by Danny Villeneuve – Dune – has been postponed to 2024.
