5 differences between the book and the movies

Check out some differences between the films and books of ‘The Princess Diaries’, a classic from the 2000s

The “Princess Diaries” franchise, starring Anne Hathaway It is Julie Andrewswas one of Disney’s biggest hits in the early 2000s. The plot features the story of a teenager named Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she is a princess and is prepared to inherit the throne of a small kingdom called Genovia.

What many fans may not know is that, in reality, the famous franchise was inspired by a series of books written by the author. Meg Cabot, with some adaptations. Thinking about it, RECREIO separated a list with 5 differences between the books and films of “The Princess Diary” that are worth knowing. Check out!

1. Mia’s father

Early on in the first film, we learn that Mia has become the only direct heir to the throne of Genovia after the passing of her father, Phillipe Renaldi. However, in the books, the prince never died. In the work, the man is described as bald, full of girlfriends and who has just recovered from testicular cancer.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2017, meg revealed why Disney dropped Philipe from the films: “They said, ‘Well, we have this actress, who’s a great actress, that we want to play the grandmother. And we want to make her role a lot bigger, and kind of raise the stakes, and give her a lot more lines, and we think we can give her her father’s lines’”.


2. No San Francisco

One of the highlights of the first film are the landscapes of the city of San Francisco, where the production is set. However, in the books, the story takes place entirely in New York. In fact, many events in Mia’s social life take place in New York tourist attractions, such as her prom, which takes place on the deck of the Empire State Building.


3. Friendship between Mia and Lana

In the 2001 film, Mia and popular cheerleader Lana are bitter enemies and are always at war. In the books, the two also star in great discussions, but end up ending the story as friends. After the Genovia heiress breaks up with her high school sweetheart Michael, they go shopping together, and grow closer. In the end, the two begin to always have lunch together.


4. Hair color and other friends

The Mia of the movies and the books have some very different characteristics. To begin with, in the work of meg the princess is blonde, and has hair that grows in a triangular shape. In addition, Queen Clarisse’s granddaughter also appears in the books with a large group of friends, while in Disney productions her only colleagues are Michael, Jeremiah and Lily.


5. End of Michael and Mia

However, in the books, this character does not exist, and the heiress ends her story with Michael, her best friend’s brother and her high school boyfriend. At a certain point in history, the two separate for a few years, but end up meeting again and resume their relationship.
