A member of the royal family without shoes
Grieving after the suicide of one of her best friends, Roman Kemp actually met the Princess of Wales and Princes William and Harry a few years ago to discuss actions to raise awareness of the symptoms and effects of depression. In 2021, following the release of her documentary on men’s mental health, Kate Middleton again asked a journalist to produce a short web film in which men discuss suicide on camera.
“It was an honor, but it was also one of the strangest things. We called on Zoom, just me and him,” he begins Times. After a discussion, they decide to meet face to face. “He said. “Oh, you know, I can come over to your house and do it there. And I said: “No, let’s go to my parents. It’s a bigger house. I don’t want to bring royalties to an apartment in Vauxhall (London borough, editor’s note),” recalls Roman Kemp.
This meeting remains memorable for the journalist. “We were sitting at the kitchen counter with my mum and dad and my sister and all the dogs and Kate was there with us,” she explains. Before adding sarcastically. “The funny thing is that he had no shoes because he had the decency to take them off at the door. It stuck in my mind because you never see the royal family without shoes.”
A breach of protocol, a habit?
Although there is no binding code of conduct, members of the royal family are required to adhere to a number of rules, including always dressing appropriately and elegantly. But Kate Middleton doesn’t hesitate to break protocol from time to time by going all out random or even showing signs of affection in public, which English etiquette advises against.
