But do you know what fire and water mean in the context of the movie?

The film’s director, Peter Sohnwho has already directed the feature “The Good Dinosaur” (2016), another Pixar production, explained during an interview with D23 about how the choices of setting and characters were, and how he thought about the relationship of the protagonists, which are completely different elements. opposites.

We wanted to create a good introduction to Sparkle and Blob’s possible relationship. When Faísca takes off her headphones and her hand touches Gota’s on the subway, there is a small drop on Faisca’s hand to remind the viewer: ‘Oh yeah, they can’t mix very well’. It’s a subtle thing, but there’s a little smile at the end; there’s something there. What is that? It’s just a provocation,” commented Sohn.

The filmmaker even revealed more about the creative process of the plot. He said:

When I first presented this story and started to develop it, I asked myself, ‘What is fire?’ People might see this as a strong temper. People can see it as passion. In practice, fire burns and sparks—but what does it mean to burn? There are all these ingredients for what we already know as fire, and that started to form the personality of Spark.”

After explaining the meaning of fire within the animation, Sohn also explained how water is seen in the film’s plot.

Water can be transparent. What does that mean? He is much more transparent in his emotions. He goes with the flow. It helped form these personalities that were already quite opposite, and so we had to find the space where they overlapped. This is the magic that gives hope. I hope people understand the sparks, the chemical reaction, that can form a relationship.”
