Discover the nationality of Straw Hat, the main character of ‘One Piece’
Released in 1999, more than 20 years of ‘One Piece’ have transformed the narrative that accompanies a band of pirates who seek fame, power and riches contained in the greatest and most sought after treasure in the world left by Gol D. Roger, the King dos Piratas, in the most watched anime in the world in the last 15 years, as determined by TecTudo through IMDB in 2022.
Part of the relevance of the work can be attributed to its characters, who, with unique characteristics, captivated audiences around the globe. Some of them are: Monkey D. Luffy, Roronoa Zoro, Usopp, Sanji, Nami, Chopper, Robin, Franky and Brook, the main members of the crew.
Still talking about the great figures of the production, Luffy, the great protagonist, was the subject of speculation about his nationality, since due to his aesthetic attributes, such as his messy hair, and the use of blue shorts, sandals and a red vest, many believed that he was, in fact, Brazilian.
After all, is Luffy Brazilian or not?
The question was answered by Eiichiro Odathe creator of the series, through Shitsumon wo Boshu Suru (SBS), that is, the part reserved in the ‘One Piece’ manga, where he himself answers and answers questions sent by fans, as verified by the Legião dos Heróis portal.
On the SBS for volume 56 of the anime, a reader asked, “If the setting of ‘One Piece’ was the real world, what nationalities would the nine members of the Straw Hat Pirates be?”
So, to clarify the nationalities of the pirate team, oda he responded:
Hmm, well, just coming out of their appearance: Luffy (Brazil), Zoro (Japan), Nami (Sweden), Usopp (Africa), Sanji (France), Chopper (Canada), Robin (Russia), Franky (America) and Brook (Austria)”.
Will Luffy be Brazilian in the Netflix series?
The question of Luffy’s nationality has also been extended to the upcoming adaptation of the Straw Hat Pirates: the Netflix live-action series that debuts in the streaming catalog on August 31st.
This is because, in 2020, a Twitter user had asked that the new production also be full of diversity in the cast, as well as in the characters of the manga and anime. At the time, the adaptation official account in flesh and blood replied the tweet with the flags of the nationalities that oda had mentioned in the SBS answer. Look:
