The Biarritz-Nouvelles Vagues International Film Festival starts this year with an unprecedented concept. “to tell young people and rely on their vision”, commented Jérôme Pulis, the founding president of the festival. From June 28 to July 2, this meeting of film lovers will assemble a jury of artists under the age of 35, who will be responsible for competing among a dozen films – first, but not only.
To lead this first edition, Jerome Pulis, Sandrine Brauer, chief delegate, and Lily Hinstein, director of programming, chose Syed Rusta. At the age of 33, the director from Tehran is considered one of the new miracles of Iranian cinema. Multidisciplinary jury
For this, he can count on the help of his judges, Lina Khoudry and Dali Bensala, American actors Camila Morone and Noah Centineo, actress, director Francesca Scorsese, Martin’s daughter, but also dancer and choreographer Leo Walk. “We wanted to create a multidisciplinary jury. many subjects are related to the 7th art, and we are interested in observing their vision as artists,” adds Jerome Pulis. The competition? It brings together a selection of eight eclectic international films from Italy, France, Spain, Senegal and even Canada, the United Kingdom and China.

These films made me dive into the world of youth, which is incredibly resonant among all countries. There is a form of universality,” says Sandrine Brower. The screenings, available to the public, will take place over five days with breaks Gasteria (“youth”, in Basque), a kind of talk in which famous directors and artists like Cédric Klapisch or Jean-Benoit Dunkel from the Air duo will come and answer the question “What can youth do?” and explain why this topic inspires them.

Although the list of honored guests is still kept secret (big names are being circulated), Nouvelles Vagues, with the support of Chanel, intends to be a festival that is both friendly and international in importance. Thus, in addition to the official competition, it foresees a prize awarded by students of film schools around the world, but also meetings with professionals, seminars, gala evenings, an outdoor screening on the beach, as well as school sessions for schools. period. The 2023 version of the new channel begins there.
