Women by immersion 2/5.- Explorer, filmmaker, deputy submarine commander… These exceptional pioneers work below sea level and tell us about their lives in this deep world. Franca Cibecchini is an archaeologist responsible for the coast of Corsica.
Diving
Born with his feet on the ground, he wanted to be an Etruscanologist, “not very original for someone who lives between Florence and Siena.” The parents’ house is surrounded by Etruscan tombs. “I learned to swim well quite late, around 11 years old. Nothing sent me to sea. After a search, a simple dive course generated a click.
The first destruction
“It was in 1993, as part of my master’s degree, outside Livorno. It was in several pieces, transferred ceramics from the 18th centurye century. I remember every little colorful plate, big vats that could hold up to 3000 liters of wine. Interesting destruction. you have a snapshot of the exact moment everything stopped. As a researcher, you reconstruct the history of trade, find amphorae that bear seals and tell the story of the maker, you trace human activity in relation to historical facts. I really like terrestrial archaeology, but in water you develop three-dimensionally, you depend. It’s like mindfulness meditation. you listen to your breath, you’re in your bubble, isolated, but you have to worry about the team around you. This aspect is very beautiful.’

Mare nostrum
At the Department of Underwater and Underwater Archaeological Research (Drassm), he leads the management of underwater heritage. “I have to protect it from submarine cables, fishermen, make it known. Everything in the sea belongs to the state, therefore to everyone. Saying “You are in the process of destroying the common wealth”, recovering this information goes a long way towards increasing awareness, appropriation and respect for this heritage. I started at the age of 20. i remember some dive instructors who used to take everything they found and shoot everything they saw, that’s not the case anymore. Young people prefer to take photos. The relationship between man and the sea has changed a little. And then today certain actions are criminally punished.
