[SPOILERS DE ‘A PEQUENA SEREIA’ ABAIXO]
Bringing a nod to the original tale of ‘The Little Mermaid’, Disney’s live-action focused on the story of Princess Ariel features at the beginning of the film a quote from Hans Christian Andersenthe author of the story read in the book that served as inspiration for the 1989 animation and the new Mickey Mouse House movie that premieres today, 25, in theaters.
But, more than a reference to the work of Hansthere is an even deeper reason behind the inclusion of the line: “A mermaid has no tears and therefore she suffers much more”, as explained by the director Rob Marshall and the producer John DeLuca at a global launch press conference (via Omelette).
The first thing John and I did when we started this journey was go back to the Hans Christian Andersen tale to understand where it all came from”; began Marshall. “We were bringing more depth and emotion [para o live-action].”
This is because, the set of words in the book connects with the message that the film wants to convey: “We are immediately aware of how this was a very contemporary story already in the 1830s: this young woman who feels out of place and wants to go on a journey of self-discovery to another world. The idea that a mermaid doesn’t have tears, she feels and suffers more, seemed to set us up for this most moving narrative in history”, concludes Marshall.
It is worth remembering that the changes and inclusions in the live-action do not end there. The soundtrack made by Alan Menken at the end of the 1980s, it gained changes to the songs “Poor Unfortunate Souls” (in Portuguese, “Corações Infelizes”) and “Kiss the Girls” (in Portuguese, “Beije a Moça”). Furthermore, Lin-Manuel Miranda composed the three unpublished songs of the film.
With Halle Bailey in the lead role and Melissa McCarthy like Úrsula, “The Little Mermaid” also features in its cast names like Jacob Tremblay (Jack’s Room), Awkwafina (Crazy Rich), Javier Bardem (Where the Weak Have No Country) and Daveed Diggs (Hamilton). Remember the trailer!
