The jury at the film festival noted how the director conveys the tension in the depiction of the Russian invasion, adding that interviews with the film make it an important work not only today but for future generations.

Chernobyl 22, a Ukrainian film directed by Aleksey Radinsky, won the Grand Prix at the International Short Film Festival in Oberhausen. He announced this on Telegram.

The documentary tells about the war crimes of the Russian occupation forces in the Chernobyl zone and the history of the occupation of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Shots taken on a mobile phone are complemented by photo testimonies of local residents and station workers.

“While working on the film, we conducted more than twenty interviews with witnesses of Russian war crimes in the zone. These people are very different: from nuclear plant workers to environmentalists. Their testimony was united by one observation: the Russians ended up in Chernobyl, with no idea where they actually hit,” shared Radinsky.

The director also noted that he was glad not to make a film about the work of the Chernobyl power plant, and if this plot remained in the realm of science fiction. However, fate decreed otherwise.

It was previously reported that the Writers Guild of America, which unites nearly 11,500 screenwriters, is on strike.

The Ukrainian-Polish film entered the program of the Cannes Film Festival
