Organizing the space to bring in the circulation of light and color is the basis of Studio Castille’s work in this 3-room apartment in Paris. Agatha Tissier
Studio Castille has renovated a very classic Haussmann three-room apartment of 64 m2. Result: after four months of operation, the space is bright, perfect for a surf-crazy young Parisian couple.
Color, light, charm and all this without sacrificing functionality… This is the style of Studio Castille. This agency, a specialist in interior architecture, based in Paris and Lyon and run by a trio of women, has a style that is recognizable by everyone and perfectly in tune with the times. Frequently consulted for the redesign of spaces intended for family life, the team nevertheless addresses all requirements. So France Lepoutre, co-founder of Studio Castille, takes us on a tour of a tiny Parisian apartment designed for a surfing-loving couple. A detail that is important in the layout of the area…
The starting point
“This 64 m² Haussmann apartment on the Boulevard de Courcelles in Paris was already very well designed in terms of room distribution. Therefore, our clients did not want a major rebuild. Rather, it was a matter of updating so that everything was nice in the large living room with its kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and small office. We didn’t even touch the floor, well maintained Hungarian dot parquet that we just sanded and refinished. We replaced the windows to insulate. However, there was one feature in the technical specifications. provide space to store surfboards. We found a solution in the entrance. The kitchen is also a success here. Therefore, no revolution, but beautiful ideas that change everything.

Then, hardwood floors, paint, and here’s the updated entry. Agatha Tissier
“When entering the apartment, on the right is the small office and the bathroom, on the left is the bedroom, and at the end is the living room. We used this hallway to store our clients’ surfboards, sacrificing the 60 centimeters of ceiling height that was tolerable in this entry to create a false ceiling. Between the ceiling and the false ceiling is therefore a kind of linear cabinet with a height perfectly adapted to the format of the boards. This unusual request led us to create this bespoke solution, which is always an exciting challenge. Other work in this entry: whitewashing the walls to bring in light and replacing the ugly black tiles with parquet. »
Living room off the kitchen

In the past, the kitchen is curiously surrounded by arches. Castile Studio
Then, an elegant and practical kitchen. Agatha Tissier
“The original kitchen was really the downside of the apartment. The layout was ideal, but it was made up of strange arches. Quite a special aesthetic choice in this magnificent corner living room, 35 m², pleasant and very bright with its four windows. Our idea was to make it as ventilated as possible to benefit from the impression of space. For the kitchen part, we kept an island, which is important because the owners love to cook. This island accommodates built-in countertops and an oven, with a wine cellar at the base. The island is covered with Orac Decor coating, painted in a light shade that coordinates with the fronts of the cabinets; it integrates harmoniously and does not “smudge”. We have made a choice of elegance and purity around this piece of furniture. of course there is a kitchen, but it doesn’t weigh down the atmosphere. For storage, we chose Ikea boxes dressed with Bocklip fronts in Seed, chic and understated. We integrated the sink into the quartz worktop and placed the dishwasher underneath. On the right, we used an old door that was already closed to create a round alcove with custom-designed shelves. It can be used to store small appliances so that the worktop and island are not cluttered. This niche is painted in a stronger color to highlight its beautiful shapes. Finally, we offered customers Verner Panton vase pendant lights. A little stroke of craziness was choosing them in yellow. The dining room and living room are extensions of the kitchen.

“The owners wanted to have a beautiful library in their living room. So we made it to measure and it takes up an entire section of wall. It somewhat echoes the kitchen niche. The lower part has closed cabinets to hide everything that is not visible, and the upper part has shelves to store books and display beautiful things. We played with the wall recess to create depth without crushing the space. If the apartment is quite neutral in terms of colors, the clients wanted a real touch of color for this piece of furniture, hence the supposed green. »
The bathroom
Previously, a black and white bathroom. Castile Studio
Then, a more thoughtful bathroom with textured whites and greens. Agatha Tissier
“The places here were very limited. So everything had to be compact. We rearranged the layout a bit by moving the toilet under the hot water tank to create more room for the current basin. We kept the bathroom. it was well integrated into the space. And its maintenance made it possible to limit costs. Working on color brings light. The room was white and black. We decided to let the white take over and added green wall tiles for a little lightness that adds to the sensuality.”
Bedroom
Previously, a room with furniture without personality. Castile Studio
Then adding colors and beautiful materials for comfort. Agatha Tissier
“This room is 13 m². We lost a few centimeters because we had an insulating panel, like in the living room, by the way, through which we ran various cables and networks so that they were invisible. It’s a trade-off that makes it possible to increase thermal efficiency and therefore reduce energy consumption. In this bedroom, we have installed a series of beige cabinets. this instantly adds elegance. These storage units don’t go up as there was some very nice molding on the ceiling and it would be a shame to hide that.
