A victim of a hack, the Lithuanian platform wants to be hopeful. ABACA:
In late March, scams targeted some members of the online used clothing platform, which assured victims that they would be compensated and that it was now “getting the issue under control”.
“On Wednesday night around 02:00, I received two calls from the phone number starting with “01”, which I did not answer. I then received two voice messages with the voice repeating four characters. My account was hacked, my kitty was empty. This user’s testimony gathered on the Vinted platform forum on Friday March 24th is far from isolated. Last week, a large-scale fraud hit members of a resale platform between individuals. “We have recently blocked access to several of our members’ accounts due to an incident where fraudulent access to those accounts was observed,” a spokesperson for the Lithuanian company confirmed to AFP. “The connection information used (usernames, passwords, etc.) was obtained from data researched elsewhere outside the platform and is not associated with Vinted,” the platform defends. “Additionally, we can confirm that credit card details are not fully visible when logging into an account,” it added in a statement.
Current compensation
“I reported it and Winted fixed the problem and I got my kitty back,” the same user concluded on the forum on March 24. Others still remain without news after reporting their mishaps, but the platform is designed to be reassuring. Without specifying the number of affected members or estimating damages, Vinted confirmed that those affected “will be entitled to compensation for loss of funds in their Vinted wallet.” The company contacted by AFP could not say whether these were scams targeting members in France or worldwide. Founded in 2008 in Lithuania, Vinted employs 1,500 people and its platform has more than 65 million users as of June 2022.
