How did Disney Princesses come to be?

With animations starring princesses and thousands of featured products, disney princess is currently one of the most successful franchises of the Walt Disney Company. But when did the brand come about and how does it work?

Disney Princess (originally called Disney Princess) is a franchise focused on children’s products using the image of Disney princesses, and there is a variety of merchandise such as clothing, cosmetics, toys, accessories, decor, among other things. The basis of the brand is the group of female characters called Disney Princesses, who starred in films that were successful for the studio.

But how did the Disney Princess come to be?

The line appeared between 1999 and 2000, when Andy Mooneya former Disney Products executive noticed that there was a high demand for the studio’s most popular princess costumes, because until then, girls in the US ended up wearing a generic princess outfit for Halloween parties.

At the beginning, Roy Edwardnephew ofwalt disney, was against the creation of the brand, as he believed that characters from different fairy tales could not be mixed. Despite the vote against, the project was launched and, when there was the announcement, all the promotional material showed the characters together, but without interaction between them, or even making any eye contact with each other — and this was the first time that the princesses were seen together and marketed unrelated to their films.

When the franchise was created, there were only 10 princesses, but over the years, with the emergence of new characters and the creation of rules to be able to integrate into the group, we currently have 12 official Disney princesses. It is noteworthy that not all female characters from the Disney universe are present in the set and even not all princesses and queens from the studio’s stories are part of the brand.

Check out the list of Disney Princess characters:

  • Snow White (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
  • Cinderella (Cinderella)
  • Aurora (Sleeping Beauty)
  • Ariel (The Little Mermaid)
  • Belle (Beauty and the Beast)
  • Jasmine (Aladdin)
  • Pocahontas (Pocahontas)
  • Mulan (Mulan)
  • Tiana (The Princess and the Frog)
  • Rapunzel (Tangled)
  • Merida (Brave)
  • Moana (Moana)

There are also some princesses that were removed from the group that were in the franchise’s original lineup. Among them was Tinkerbell (which is also called Tinker Bell) from “Peter Pan”, which was chosen to be part of another brand, Disney Fairies. Esmeralda, a character from “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”, was withdrawn for not being considered commercial enough, since the animation pleased more the adult audience than children, which is the target of the Disney Princess. The characters Giselle from “Enchanted” and Jane from “Tarzan” were even considered to join the group of princesses, but they did not pass the final selection.
