Why was the hotel scene cut? showrunner responds

One of the favorite moments of those who played ‘The Last of Us‘ is not present in the HBO series: the saga in the basement of the hotel. The reason why the scene was not included was explained by Craig Mazinthe showrunner of the production, in an interview with GQ Magazine.

mazin said that scenes like these are difficult to reproduce since they focus only on one character, where there is only action and atmosphere, unlike what happens with more characters on screen, where actions and interactions stand out more.

This is a terrifying sequence. But it’s harder to do solo sequences like this, where it’s one character alone and it’s just about action and atmosphere… Action sequences are best appreciated by us watching the characters’ reactions and interactions. Like in the Neil-directed episode where Tess, Joel and Ellie are at the museum and the clickers come. A lot of it is about them looking at each other. And that’s where the character magic happens.”

Furthermore, Neil Druckmannco-creator of the game, reported that one of the sequences he likes most in the game could not be faithfully adapted to the screen, because if it were done, it would leave the series very far from reality.

One of my favorite sequences in the game is when Joel falls through the rebar. And you’re playing as Joel and Ellie guiding and protecting you. Had we done it exactly the same way, the show would have suffered. Joel falling through rebar is less realistic for the show we’re building on.

‘The Last of Us’ had the last episode of its first season released on March 12 by HBO and is now available in the catalog of the streaming platform HBO Max. The series already has the second season confirmed, as well as the return of Bella Ramsey in the role of Ellie.
