During the break of this year’s edition of the Oscars, the main award of world cinema, Disney released the official trailer and poster of “The Little Mermaid”, live-action that brings a new interpretation of the classic musical animation that has exclusive debut in theaters from across the country scheduled for May 25, 2023. “The Little Mermaid” features the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. As the youngest and most rebellious of King Triton’s daughters, Ariel longs to discover more about the world beyond the sea, and upon visiting the surface, she falls in love with the elegant Prince Eric.
Although mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, the princess must follow her heart and, for that, she makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, who gives her the chance to live on dry land, but ends up putting her life—and his father’s crown—in jeopardy.
The production stars the singer and actress Halle Baileyin the role of Princess Ariel; Jonah Hauer-King (The Way Home) as Prince Eric; Daveed Diggs (Hamilton) as the voice of Sebastião; Awkwafina (Raya and the Last Dragon) as the voice of Scuttle; Jacob Tremblay (Luca) as Flounder’s voice; Noma Dumezweni (Mary Poppins Returns) as Queen Selina; Art Malik (Homeland) as Sir Grimby; Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) as King Triton; It is Melissa McCarthy (Podia Me Perdoar?; Maid of Honor Mission) as Úrsula.
“The Little Mermaid” is directed by Oscar®-nominated filmmaker, Rob Marshall (Chicago, Mary Poppins Returns), with a screenplay by the two-time Oscar® nominee, David Magee (Life of Pi, Finding Neverland). The soundtrack features music from multi-Academy Award® winner, Alan Menken (Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin) and lyrics by Howard Ashmanwith new lyrics by three-time Tony Award® winner, Lin-Manuel Miranda.
The live-action film is produced by two-time Emmy® winner, Marc Platt (Jesus Chris Superstar Live in Concert, Grease Live!), Lin-Manuel Mirandaby two-time Emmy® winner, John DeLuca (Tony Bennett: An American Classic) and Rob Marshallwith Jeffrey Silver (The Lion King) serving as executive producer.
