Cole Sprouse is opening up about the heartbreak he felt after ending his real-life relationship with ‘Riverdale’ co-star Lili Reinhart.
The actor appeared on Wednesday’s episode of the “Call Her Daddy” podcast and talked at length about what it was like to continue acting alongside Reinhart on “Riverdale” after their 2020 split.
“It’s been really hard for both of us, and that’s okay,” Sprouse said. “I think the work became difficult because it was hard to put aside everything we felt for each other. He didn’t give us the luxury of distance to really get over it. I know we’ve both hurt each other enough.”
Reinhart and Sprouse met while filming the first season of “Riverdale,” which premiered on The CW in January 2017. However, the pair didn’t make their romance official until May 2018, when they met , attended the Met Gala.
For the next two years, the famously private actors kept their on-and-off relationship away from the social media glare. In March 2020, however, Sprouse confirmed on Instagram that he and Reinhart had “broken up for good,” adding, “I will always feel lucky and appreciate that I had the chance to fall in love.”
However, in his “Call Her Daddy” discussion this week, Sprouse suggested he would have ended the relationship sooner “if you loved me a little bit more.”
“I felt like I had to take care of a lot of people around me, which wasn’t good for me,” she explained. “I probably should have exercised a little more selfishness in this situation.”
These days, Sprouse is happily in a new relationship with Ari Fournier, a French-Canadian model. Last year, Reinhart was romantically linked to fellow actor Spencer Neville, whose credits include “The Sex Lives of College Girls” and “Ozark.” Neither has publicly confirmed a relationship.
Describing himself as a “serial monogamist,” Sprouse said his romance with Fournier “awakened me to what true compatibility and trust are like.”
He went on to say, “This is the first relationship where I can say, ‘Damn, I trust this.’
