Congress also asked the film academy to issue a strong statement at the ceremony condemning Russia’s war against Ukraine.
The World Congress of Ukrainians called on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to cancel the Oscar nomination for Top Gun: Maverick. The corresponding letter is published on the website.
It is noted that the reason for this is the financing of the film by the Russian oligarch Dmitry Rybolovlev, who fell under the sanctions of Ukraine.
It is known that he is one of the richest Russian oligarchs and a known close friend and business partner of Yuri Trutnev, and he is also the largest business partner of the self-proclaimed President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko.
“We call on the academy to reject films with direct or indirect investment from Russian oligarchs or other participants in Russia’s genocidal war against Ukraine and to re-evaluate Top Gun: Maverick’s eligibility for participation in the 95th Academy Awards,” the statement said.
It was previously reported that Paramount and Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick topped the US box office in its first weekend.
The 2023 Oscar nominees have been announced
