Miss Figaro. – How did you choose the fighters you described?
Julie Gayet. – All embody issues that women face. Lunise Marquis is endometriosis and Gwenaëlle Perrousset is crisis management for victims of domestic violence. Georgette Chastanet recalls the cycle of victimhood and resilience, and Marie Servette the reintegration of isolated women. The lawyer Valance Borgia is the recognition of rights and Anne-Cécile Mailfert the idea of uniting, mobilizing politicians with her Women’s Foundation. The only man, international voice also Dr: Denis Mukwege, who faces all this and more in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

These women are little known to the public…
Tomorrow’s Gisele Halimi, those who will be quoted twenty years from now, may come from all walks of life. If my commitment was born, it was thanks to these inspiring women, anonymous and in the arena, whom I met and whom we do not highlight enough. Through them, I wanted to talk about doing, everyday life, the link that unites people in action and not in words. This corresponds to my deep nature. If I became an entrepreneur, a producer, a festival founder, it is to give voices other than my own to be heard and to encourage talents and backgrounds.

Less than a quarter of French films are directed by women, and they still receive 45% less budget

Julie Gayet

Why now?
When we shot the documentary Film directors With Mathieu Busson, who I also wrote the book with, a lot of people started by telling us that women’s representation is not a topic that we should move on to. Then I asked myself about the legitimacy of the film. Ten years later, thanks to numerical studies, we have become more aware of the disparities; less than a quarter of French films are directed by women, and they still receive 45% less budget. Focusing on the concrete, I once again wanted to put the church back in the center of the village. what argument can we make against the tangible, everyday reality of those who are fighting together for increasingly holistic care?

“MeThe speeches are so polarized that it’s hard to be heard while standing your ground»

Do you hear it increase over time?
Above all, I feel an opposition force. When I was young, feminism was a dirty word, so caricatured. Today, the very term “vocism” is mocked to discredit the struggle. We continue to divide good and bad points, sometimes forgetting that this is a necessary thought. The idea is not to destroy society, but to enrich it with undervalued and untapped voices. However, the speeches are so polarized that it is difficult to be heard while defending the tone. My commitment, like the commitment of the women and men I speak of, is one of equality, vigilance, and concrete action. Other causes will thrive better when there is a balance between the sexes.

You also talk intimately about yourself in these pages.
We are all the fruit of the violence that preceded us. I tell the story in the book, but my mother, my absolute role model, told me one day on the street: “He is dead”. I immediately knew the violence she evoked behind these words, even though she had never said anything to me… This story marked me unconsciously, like so many others, including more positive ones, such as the story of my great-grandmother, Therese. , was one of the first women to earn her medical degree. Banned from training, he founded his own laboratory, gained his independence.

Your loyalty informs most of your choices. Is it conscious?
Projects, I take them on or initiate them because they tell a female story that appeals to me. In Like an actress (2),I play a 50-year-old actress scared of losing her husband, a director who wants to cast a younger performer for the show. Through the Twin Sisters Festival, I want to promote female talent in music and acting. Soon I will again direct my first television film for France 2 with Mathieu Busson on Olympe de Gouges, pioneer of feminism and author of the Declaration of the Rights of Women and Citizens. He is one of those whose history he tried to erase. A movie was never made about him.

Do you notice an evolution in the world of cinema?
Having a rapporteur today on issues of combating sexual harassment and sexist behavior has changed the situation. I recently saw on the set. the makeup artist and boom woman alerted their referee about the excesses, and the culprit began shaving the walls. Not so long ago they would have said nothing and lived through the nightmare or even given up on this shoot. It’s crazy to think that some people still dare, but the more complaints there are, the more abuses there will be. It’s all about education. That’s where I end the book. I have two wonderful sons, but I saw how much they too had to deal with this toxic masculinity. It is the responsibility of all of us to change that.
