Find out what life was like in Arendelle before Elsa and Anna in the ‘Frozen’ franchise
Currently, “Frozen” is one of the most profitable franchises within the animation universe. The plot tells the story of the sisters Anna and Elsa, heirs to the throne of Arendelle, who assume the throne after the death of their parents, King Agnarr and Queen Iduna, who lost their lives in a tragic shipwreck.
During the two films already released, we follow the development of the characters after the sudden loss of their parents, Elsa’s coronation, her escape to the mountains after everyone discovers her powers, the reconciliation between the sisters, Anna’s ascension to the throne, and a lot more. But, have you ever wondered what happened in Arendelle before all that? We tell you!
a recent past
Incredibly, the kingdom of Arendelle has not existed for as long as many imagined, since Elsa and Anna are only the fifth generation of monarchs in the royal family.
As revealed in the canon book “Frozen II: Forest of Shadows” by author Kamilla Benko, the great founder of the region is Lord Aren. In “Frozen II: Dangerous Secrets”, by writer Mari Mancusiwe discover that the first descendants of Aren are King Eric and Queen Else, followed by King Runeard and Queen Rita, until finally we arrive at Agnarr and Iduna, parents of Anna and Elsa.
Despite this, not much information exists about events in Arendelle during the reigns of Aren and King Eric. During the second film of the franchise, we only discover some of the actions carried out by King Runeard, mainly presenting the ancient relationship between the Arendellians and the Northuldra tribe.
In the feature, Runeard builds a dam, and offers it as a gift to the Northuldra. However, despite appearing to be an act of peace, the monarch’s intentions behind this action were much darker than many imagined.
The film explains that the monarch feared the tribe due to their involvement with magic and, for that reason, decided that he needed to eliminate them once and for all — and the dam built in the Enchanted Forest was part of his plan, since, with it, the Northuldrans would be weakened by having less access to natural resources in the environment.
Although the idea worked for a while, the leader of the tribe eventually realized Runeard’s true intentions, and confronted the king of Arendelle. The two decide they need to talk privately, and end up traveling to a fjord while an Arendellian celebration takes place in the Enchanted Forest.
During the conversation, Runeard kills the leader of the Northuldrans, and a war between Arendelle and the tribe ensues. The king also ends up losing his life during the conflict, however, the situation ended up enraging the four spirits of the Enchanted Forest, who trapped everyone who was there by creating an impenetrable cloud, making it impossible to enter or leave the place — at least until Elsa’s arrival in “Frozen 2”.
What Runeard probably never imagined is that his son, Agnarr, responsible for taking his place on the throne after his death, would end up marrying a member of the Northuldrans tribe, after being saved by the same during the same battle, transforming her as the new Queen of Arendelle.
