In search of “moral clarity” for the best abortion laws in human history, the Saturday Night Live crew – as well as Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito – traveled back in time. The show’s cold opening took place in 1235: when “reproductive rights were violated”, host Benedict Cumberbatch was a medieval man.
The scene began with bizarre quotes from Alito’s views that leaked this week that Rowe Wade was interested in calling abortion based on an agreement a “crime”. England in the thirteenth century (E from 1600).
Andrew Dismux wears a wig and tunic, but is interested in having an abortion in case of “rape or incest”. James Austin Johnson’s character complained: “But that’s the only kind of sex!”
Farmer Cecil Strong suggests that focusing on other issues could be more urgent, for example: “No one can read and write and everyone is dying of the plague!”
“Do you think just because I have an active sore, it means I have to wear a mask?” Question of an angry disassembler. “This is my body, my choice!”
Cumberbatch decided that “we have reached the limits of human knowledge” in 1235, when “we trust the Catholic Church with all our money and children”.
“We already have birth control,” Johnson added. “You can’t get pregnant unless a man whispers during ejaculation: ‘You’re kidding.’
Observer Kate McKinnon apparently predicted that “one day barbaric laws will eliminate so-called development.” Then, 50 years later, they’ll say, “Maybe we should stop progress.”
But “no matter how many choices women make, we always have the opportunity to continue to fight!” McKinnon said, fist clenched, into the depths of the audience.
“You are a wizard,” said Cumberbatch, “and we will burn you.”
