After all, why did Jetix end?

Find out why Jetix, one of the most nostalgic broadcasters, came to an end

Watching the most diverse animations was, and still is, one of the children’s favorite activities, as they can spend hours in front of the TV watching the most different cartoons, jumping from channel to channel to find the story they like most at that moment.

Among the channels that had animated narratives as part of their programming is Jetix, a station that emerged in 2004 and ended up ending its activities less than five years later, in 2009. But, after all, why did Jetix end?

From the beginning

Jetix came to replace Fox Kids, a children’s block that appeared in 1993 within the Fox channel, but which in 1996 became a broadcaster in Brazil and in the rest of Latin America, becoming one of the most watched children’s channels of pay TV.

Fox Kids featured in its programming several animations such as ‘X-Men’, ‘Spider-Man’ and also iconic series, such as the colorful — and beloved to this day — ‘Power Rangers’.

After eleven years of existence, Fox Kids was renamed Jetix in Brazil in 2004, years after the Fox channel was purchased by Disney. Even so, in the USA the change in the block was made earlier, since in 2002 Jetix started to be shown in Toon Disney in the USA.

During its active time, Jetix brought various animations such as ‘PUCCA’, ‘Yin Yang Yo’, ‘Beyblade’, ‘Kid vs. Kat’ and ‘WITCH’, a drawing that featured five teenagers who, when chosen to be the new Guardians of the Oracle of Kandrakar, became the holders of the powers of the five elements.

The end

However, Jetix did not last long and came to an end in 2009 after a new Disney revamp. In Brazil, the company decided that the station would be renamed Disney XD (from X-Treme Digital), in order to bet on greater interactivity between TV and the internet, since the channel’s web portal had bonus episodes and even continuations of chapters of the main programs, series and drawings presented.

In addition, Disney also wanted to focus on the names “ABC” and “ESPN”, which meant that the programming of the extinct Jetix was changed, since ‘Power Rangers’, a title that was already one of the channel’s classics, no longer aired and became part of only the programming of ABC channels.

With the change, the programming of the Disney XD began to prioritize original Disney content, as is the case with the comedy series ‘Zack and Cody: Twins in Action’, which was launched in 2005 to address the adventures of the two brothers after their mother gets a job at the Tipton Hotel, Boston’s five-star hotel.

In addition to authorial works, the station also showed animations such as the heroic plots of ‘Batman’, ‘Spider-Man’ and ‘Iron Man’, as well as anime, since ‘Beyblade Metal Fusion’ and ‘Digimon’ were part of the content accompanied by the children.

Although it brought a lot of fun, for the same reason as the end of Jetix, Disney XD ended up being discontinued in March 2022 so that the company could focus on a new market strategy: producing exclusive content for home streaming, Disney +.
