This Sunday, the 12th, the grand final of Super Bowl LVII takes place, one of the most anticipated events of the year for sports and music fans, being held at the University of Phoenix stadium, in Arizona, United States. But what really is this great show that everyone has been talking about?
American football’s biggest event
The Super Bowl is nothing more than the decision of the National Football League, popularly known only as the NFL, the main American football league, which takes place every year between the months of September until January / February.
During the championship, 32 teams start the dispute, where they are divided into two conferences: the AFC (American Football Conference) and the NFC (National Football Conference). Each plays 17 times during the regular tournament, but only the top seven are selected to compete in the playoffs, where the final two will be decided.
After the two best teams are elected, the NFL will meet its great champion after the two face each other in the Super Bowl. In 2023, the teams that will participate in the game are Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles, with the game being broadcast from 8:30 pm (Brasília time) through Star+ and ESPN channels.
As one of the most popular sports in the United States, the NFL Grand Final always attracts impressive numbers of viewers around the world. According to data from the National Football League itself, in the last edition alone, more than 208 million people followed the event around the world. However, it is not just the spectacle on the field that draws the public’s attention.
halftime show
In the early history of the Super Bowl, halftime often hosted college bands and local entertainers to entertain the crowd while the teams reorganized in the locker rooms.
It was only from the 1990s onwards, with the event becoming more and more popular among people inside and outside the stadiums, that halftime of the game started to gain a new luster by hosting concerts by some of the main names in the world of music to a presentation. The first big show took place in 1991, with performances by the boyband New Kids on the Block and singer Gloria Estefan.
However, the Super Bowl Halftime Show reached a new level when, in 1993, singer Michael Jackson, known as the King of Pop, was invited to perform between the first and second half of the game. In this ocasion, Michael performed the songs “Billie Jean”, “Black Or White”, “We Are The World” and “Heal The World”, winning one of the largest audiences in the history of the event.

Since then, the NFL has called on top current artists to perform during the halftime game, with solo shows or in collaborations with other bands, groups and singers. Among the names that have participated in the Intervalo Show, we have ‘N Sync and Britney Spears in 2001, Paul McCartney in 2005, Black Eyed Peas in 2011, Beyonce in 2013, Katy Perry in 2015, Coldplay ft. Beyonce & Bruno Mars in 2016, and much more.
This year, the pop diva Rihanna will be responsible for leading the Intervalo Show party, marking her return after five years away from the stage.
