HomeEntertainmentHarry Styles has come...

Harry Styles has come under fire for a tongue-in-cheek remark during his acceptance speech for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards.

Harry Styles betrayed his boy band roots Sunday night when his Grammy Album of the Year acceptance speech seemed headed in one direction, but suddenly took a sharp turn south.

The “Sign of the Times” singer ended a pretty standard acceptance speech by saying, “That doesn’t happen very often to people like me.”

That remark rubbed some viewers the wrong way considering he was up against the likes of Born Puerto Rican Bad Bunny and Beyoncé – whose respective wins would mean the first album in Spanish to win the award or the first black woman to win the award since 1999.

To many, a white artist winning the coveted award seemed like another example of the Recording Academy’s tendency to praise and maintain the status quo.

It probably doesn’t help that the Recording Academy’s membership is only 31 percent female and 33 percent from “traditionally underrepresented communities,” according to the organization.

“‘This doesn’t happen to people like me’ is the whitest privilege thing ever said at an awards show,” Vulture podcast host and former NPR reporter Sam Sanders tweeted shortly after Styles’ speech.

Other Twitter users agreed:

While it’s unclear what Styles meant by “people like me,” many of his fans assumed he was referring to someone who started out in a boy band.

Styles’ rep did not respond to a request for comment.

While Beyoncé once again walked away from the coveted award, she certainly didn’t go home empty-handed. She became the first black woman to win the Grammy Award for Best Dance/Electronic Album for her acclaimed 2022 album Renaissance, also becoming the artist with the most Grammy Awards ever won.

However, her repeated defeat in the Album of the Year category, for which she was nominated four times – continues to disturb music lovers due to the undeniable cultural significance of his albums.

This includes fellow artist Adele.

In 2017, when Adele’s “25” beat out Beyoncé’s “Lemonade” for album of the year, the “Someone Like You” singer rejected the award during her acceptance speech.

“I can’t accept this award and I’m very honored and I’m very grateful and kind, but my artist in my life is Beyoncé and this album, for me, the ‘Lemonade’ album, was so monumental, Beyoncé. ,” Adele said during her speech. “You are our light. And the way you make me and my friends feel, the way you make my black friends feel, is encouraging. You make them stand up on their own and they love you. I always have and always will.
