John Legend and Chrissy Teigen welcomed their new baby girl on Jan. 13, and the singer revealed the sweet meaning behind his daughter’s name.
The baby’s full name is Esti Maxine Stephens, as Legend’s real name is actually John Stephens.
“It turns out my great-grandmother’s name was Esther,” the entertainer told E! News in an interview published Wednesday. “It wasn’t meant for anyone, but once Chrissy pitched the idea to me, I said, ‘Oh, my great-grandmother’s name was Esther.’
“We already wanted to call her Maxine as my grandmother’s middle name, whose middle name was Maxine,” she added. “So there’s a lot of my family in the name.”

Legend and Teigen shared the first photo of Esti in joint Instagram posts on Jan. 19, nearly a week after her birth.
“The house is full of life and our family couldn’t be happier,” Teigen wrote alongside a photo of her 6-year-old daughter and 4-year-old son looking at their new baby brother.
“Daddy cries tears of joy at night seeing Luna and Miles so full of love and I learn you still need pin diapers!?” added the cookbook author with her usual candor. “We are happy. Thanks for all the love and well wishes – we feel it!
Legend and Teigen’s third child arrived just over two years after the couple suffered a miscarriage in September 2020, with an expected baby boy they’ve already named Jack.
