Get to know behind the scenes behind the relationship between Miley Cyrus and Nick Jonas at the time of the Disney Channel
With the release of “Flowers”, the first single from Miley Cyrus for her future album “Endless Summer Vacation”, the star’s love life was once again the subject of the international media, thanks to the references made by the singer in the track to her marriage to her ex-husband, the actor Liam Hemsworth.
This, however, is not the first time the star mentions ex-boyfriends in her songs. The hit “7 Things”, for example, released in 2008, was written for Nick Jonas, of the Jonas Brothers, with whom he had a relationship for just over a year, while both were still working on the Disney Channel. But how was that relationship?
‘Charming prince’
The couple met in the year 2006, when they were both signed to the Disney Channel and they were just 14 years old. In an interview for Seventeen magazine in 2008, miley revealed that the relationship between the two was love at first sight, and that “we became boyfriend and girlfriend the day we met”.
“He was on a mission to meet me, and he said, ‘I think you’re beautiful and I really like you.’ And I was like, ‘Oh my God, I like you so much.’” the star said at the time.
In 2016, during a participation on British BBC radio, nick also revealed that miley was the girl responsible for his first kiss — but that the experience might not have been so good for her.
“The first person I kissed was Miley Cyrus and it was outside California Pizza Kitchen in Hollywood – very romantic. I had just eaten a pizza full of onions. she remembers, I hope not”.
Despite the somewhat catastrophic first kiss, miley describe nick in his biography as “a prince charming”. In addition, still in an interview with Seventeen, our eternal Hannah Montana stated that they really loved each other at the beginning of the relationship.
“Nick and I loved each other. We still love each other, but we were in love. For two years he was by my side all the time. But it was very difficult to keep it discreet. We were arguing a lot and it wasn’t cool.”
At the time, neither of them assumed that they were really together, and they always said that they were just “good friends”, even if fans and the media claimed otherwise.
Niley’s End
During the same interview, which took place a year after the end of the relationship, Cyrus stated that when the relationship came to an end, she was extremely hurt and decided to “rebel” against her ex-boyfriend.
“At first, I screamed for a month straight. I was so sad. And I dyed my hair black. When we were dating, Nick wanted me to get highlights — and so I did, and it looked great. And then the day we broke up, I thought, I want to get my hair black now — I don’t want to look pretty; I want to look hard-core,” said the star. “I was rebelling against everything Nick wanted me to be. And so I thought, I have to be alone for now, and just figure out who I really am.”
It was at that time that miley would have written “7 Things”. In her book ‘Miles To Go’, she explains that she wrote the song because she “wanted to punish him for hurting me. (The song) starts with a list of what I hate. But I’m not a ‘hater’. My heart knew from the beginning that it would become a love song. But why does he get a love song? Because I don’t hate him.”
Relationship after termination
Even with the end of the relationship, miley and nick maintain a healthy relationship, and even publicly play with situations about the time when they were romantically involved — such as the love triangle involving Selena Gomez in 2008. Despite not being as close as they were when they were on the Disney Channel, both still respect each other.
