Academy revises Oscar rules after online campaign for Andrea Riseborough

Andrea Riseborough’s recent Oscar nomination delighted fans and apparently shocked the Academy.

On Friday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced a review of its campaign policies to determine whether voting rules “were violated,” the people said. Although she didn’t nominate her, the news came just three days after Riseborough unexpectedly picked up the best actress award.

“The Academy’s purpose is to ensure that the awards competition is conducted fairly and ethically,” the Academy said in a statement obtained from multiple institutions.

“We are conducting a review of campaign procedures around this year’s candidates to ensure that no guidelines have been violated,” he continued, “and to inform us whether changes to the guidelines may be necessary in a new era of social networks and digital communication. .”

Although Riseborough had already won an Independent Spirit Award for “To Leslie,” a drama about an alcoholic single mother on the brink of death, most Oscar analysts — and Riseborough herself — hadn’t considered her a favorite for the top prize. actress this year.

If Andrea Riseborough’s Oscar credit were nullified, there would only be four Best Actress nominations left.

“I’m blown away,” she told Deadline shortly after the nomination. “It was so hard for me to believe it could ever happen because I wasn’t really in the running for anything else. Although I had a lot of support, the idea that it could actually happen seemed so far away.

Many of Riseborough’s peers – including Edward Norton, Kate Winslet, Gwyneth Paltrow and Christina Ricci – took to social media before the voting period closed to lobby for her nomination. Ricci was the top star to double after the review was announced.

“It seems hilarious that the ‘surprise nomination’ (meaning tons of money wasn’t spent on placing this actress) of a legitimately brilliant performance is being met with an investigation,” she wrote in a now-deleted Instagram post, according to Deadline.

However, Variety noted that an official “To Leslie” Instagram page may have violated Academy rules two weeks ago. A since-deleted post quoted film critic Richard Roeper comparing Riseborough’s performance to that of Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for her work in Tár.

According to the rules, “any tactic that designates ‘competition’ by name or title is expressly prohibited.” (Incidentally, Blanchett used her Critics Choice Awards win earlier this month to praise Riseborough.)

The rules also allow movie studios to buy only one email series per week to promote their films, but the “To Leslie” campaign sent at least three to voters, Variety reported.

If the Academy cancels Riseborough’s nomination, only four contenders will remain: Blanchett (“Tár”), Michelle Yeoh (“Everything, Everywhere, Once”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”) and Michelle Williams (“The Fabelmans”) .

The 95th Academy Awards will air March 12 on ABC.
