Announced earlier this month, HBO Max’s ‘Velma’ will not feature Scooby-Doo. Understand why!
This Thursday, the 12th, HBO Max brings the launch of ‘Velma’, a spin-off series about the smart girl who wears glasses and helps to unravel the most diverse mysteries with her group of friends, the nosy teenagers. See the trailer!
The preview has some surprises, such as the revelation that the animation will be aimed at an adult audience, and also the absence of Scooby in the production. But why won’t he participate?
No Scooby?
During the New York Comic Con, the animation producers made a point of explaining the reason behind the iconic character’s absence, where, according to the showrunner Charlie Grandythe reason is related to the new audience of the series – in addition to a rule imposed by Warner itself.
“We couldn’t find a way to do that [incluir Scooby]. How to do this in a fun and modern way? What made the original series a children’s series was Scooby-Doo. This coincided with Warner telling us that we couldn’t use the dog. So let’s allude to the dogs of the world and leave it at that.”
Producer and voice actress Mindy Kaling completed the justification stating that another reason that may explain the lack of Scooby in the series is the time in which it is set, when all the characters were still teenagers.
“It’s a series set in high school, with events and proms, as well as being a murder mystery. Obviously, Daphne and Fred are popular while Velma is an outsider. Seeing them together will be the fun of the series,” Kaling said.
The animation dubbing cast will feature Mindy Kaling like Velma, Sam Richardson giving voice to Shaggy, Constance Wu representing Daphine and Glenn Howerton like Fred.
Furthermore, it is also confirmed Jane Lynch,“Weird Al” Yankovic, Wanda Sykes, Sarayu Blue, Russell Peters, Yvonne Orji, Melissa Fumero, Fortune Feimster, Stephen Root, Cherry Jones, Gary Cole and Ken Leung.
