The Soviet and Russian composer Eduard Artemyev died in Russia at the age of 85. This was announced by his son Artemy Artemyev, writes Snob.
Doctors assessed his condition as moderate, but the situation was complicated by chronic heart pathologies. At the same time, Artemyev himself said that he was feeling fine.
He was later transferred to the intensive care unit due to complications.
As you know, Artemyev was born on November 30, 1937 in Novosibirsk. There, his Muscovite parents were passing by. The composer lived in Moscow and Los Angeles, was married once.
During his musical career, Artemiev wrote music for more than 150 feature films.
The most famous of them are Andrei Tarkovsky’s paintings Solaris, Mirror and Stalker, Nikita Mikhalkov – Slave of Love, One’s own among strangers, a stranger among one’s own, The Barber of Siberia and Siberiad by Andrei Konchalovsky.
Artemiev’s composition entitled O sport – you are eternal progress became the theme of the opening and closing ceremonies of the XXII Olympiad Games in Moscow in 1980. And the main theme from the film “At Home Among Strangers, Stranger Among Our Own” was used in the closing ceremony of the Sochi Games.
“I formulated for myself what music is in general. Then I called music everything with height, dynamics and time. If you approach formally, discarding all aesthetic categories, then in your mind you can combine any noise and, working only in these three dimensions , to create a whole world of music. You may not realize it. I often catch myself thinking when something comes out, in fancy speaking, I touched something great,” Artemiev said at the time.
He also insists that he doesn’t feel his age, he just does what he likes.
