Harry and Meghan call The Sun’s apology for Jeremy Clarkson column a ‘PR stunt’

A spokesman for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has slammed The Sun’s apology for the recent publication of a column in which Jeremy Clarkson made hateful comments about Meghan, dismissing the apology as “nothing more than a publicity stunt”.

“The fact that the Sun has not contacted the Duchess of Sussex to apologise, shows their intentions,” Sussex’s representative said in a statement to HuffPost on Saturday.

“While the public absolutely deserve the publication’s regrets for its dangerous comments, we would not be in this situation if The Sun did not continue to profit and exploit hatred, violence and misogyny,” the spokesman added. “A real apology would be a change in their coverage and ethical standards for everyone. Unfortunately, we’re not holding our breath.”

Last week, the former ‘Top Gear’ host wrote in a column that he hated Meghan “at a cellular level” and described a horrific and degrading scenario he said he was fantasizing about.

“At night I can’t sleep as I lie there gritting my teeth and dreaming of the day she parades naked through the streets of Britain while crowds chant ‘Shame on you!’ and throw lumps of excrement into it,” Clarkson wrote.

After a backlash over the column, the “Clarkson’s Farm” personality offered a lack of apology, tweeting that she’d “rather put her foot in it,” with “an awkward reference to a scene from Game of Thrones.”

Clarkson said he was “appalled to have caused so much pain” and promised to “be more careful in the future”, but did not apologise.

The Sun apologized and the article was removed. It became the most covered article in the history of the Independent Press Standards Organization in Great Britain.

“The columnists’ opinions are their own, but as a publisher we realize that with freedom of expression comes responsibility,” the paper said in a press release. “We at The Sun regret publishing this article and are very sorry. The article has been removed from our website and archives.

The Sun did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.
