“At the moment, Finland is providing humanitarian aid to the region (Horn of Africa countries) for a total of 15.7 million euros. Of this, almost 7 million euros will go to support grain transportation through the WFP (United Nations World Food Programme) in Somalia,” the statement said.
Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Ville Skinnari said that the continuation of transportation of Ukrainian grain is “critically important.”
“The situation is particularly dire in the Horn of Africa, which is suffering from a record drought after a fifth consecutive unsuccessful rainy season. More than 20 million people are in need of food aid,” the Foreign Ministry added.
Finland provides aid to African countries with the help of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Finnish Red Cross and the International Committee of the Red Cross. The aid aims to ensure food security as well as the protection of refugees.
Recall that in just two days Ukraine sent 136,000 tons of agricultural products to African countries in six ships.
