Senator Ted Cruz (R. of Texas) tried to take over the Walt Disney Company by making obscene jokes about Mickey and Pluto on Tuesday, but it only managed to drive people away.
The Texas Republican blamed Disney’s opposition to Florida’s new Do Not Be Gay Act, which critics fear could pose a danger to LGBTQ children who are often oppressed, excluded and isolated at home or in their communities.
Since recognizing the fears and anxieties of marginalized groups isn’t exactly Cruz’s “trademark,” he chose the deceptive joke that Disney would show Mickey and Pluto having sex.
“I think there are people who are wrong, they’re trying to force Disney and they’re saying that at every stage they’re going to have Mickey and Pluto now,” he said in his judgment. Podcast.
“Thanks for this picture, Senator,” joked co-host Michael Knowles.
“But it’s just, come on, guys, it’s kids and, you know, you can always switch to Cinemax if you want!” said Cruz. “Look, I am a father. Previously, you could put your kids on a Disney channel and something harmless happened. “
Disney didn’t really set out to portray the cartoon characters “walking towards it” and Cruz was clearly trying to make a joke. But it also seems to be perfect if people follow this misunderstanding.
