Florida Gov. Ron Desantis is urging state lawmakers to consider Disney’s ability to run its vast Florida theme park empire amid its ongoing dispute with the giant company.
The Republican governor criticized Disney after the company condemned the so -called “Don’t Say Gay” bill signed by DeSantis last month. The loose word limits discussion of sexual orientation and gender in public schools, allowing parents to sue schools for alleged misconduct.
Although Disney CEO Bob Chapek initially took a neutral stance on the bill, pressure from staff, LGBTQ activists and allies forced him to vote against it.
Now the company’s special status in Florida may be at stake.
Disney’s 1967 Florida legislature, through the Reed Creek Improvement Act, had the special opportunity to form an independent government to control its theme parks. The company also operates its own electricity grid.
In a statement released Tuesday, the fight team called on lawmakers to reconsider the creation of independent special constituencies established before Nov. 5, 1968, which include Reed Creek.
The fight team convened a special session of the legislature, which was convened from Tuesday through Friday.
Disney is the state’s largest private employer.
