Despite the war, Ukraine has been increasing trade with the European Union, almost reaching pre-war levels.
Ukrainian exports to EU countries almost reached pre-war levels in August, said Taras Kachka, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister of Economy and Trade Representative.
According to the results of the three quarters of 2022, the volume of exports will exceed the corresponding pre-war figures.
“At the moment, trade between Ukraine and the European Union has actually resumed. In August, exports to the EU reached 90% of the level of exports recorded in August 2021. And in three quarter of 2022, despite the war, we exported to the EU even a few percent more than in the I-III quarters of 2021,” said Kachka.
He explained that trade activity was facilitated, in particular, by the abolition of EU quotas and duties for Ukraine.
Kachka recalled that from October 1, “customs visa-free” will work, that is, the Convention on the Joint Transit Procedure and the Convention on the Facilitation of Formalities in Trade in Goods will come into force for Ukraine. This will allow cargo to pass through the borders between Ukraine and the EU more quickly.
At the same time, the deputy minister noted that, in general, the level of Ukrainian exports, compared to the pre-war level, was reduced by almost half.
“If in January-February Ukraine exported monthly at the level of $6 billion and more, now we reach the level of $3.4 billion – this will be the result in September,” he said.
Exports fell further to North Africa and Asia, which are now being resumed only in the context of the grain initiative and the opening of ports.
It should be noted that recently the Cabinet of Ministers officially approved the complete cessation of trade with Russia.
