We are talking about the failure of the turbine, which is a key element in the production of electricity in nuclear power plants.

In western Finland, a malfunction occurred at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant. The third reactor was shut down. This was announced yesterday by the TV and radio company Yle.

According to Scandinavian electricity market operator Nordpool, the capacity of the Olkiluoto-3 reactor dropped to zero shortly before 21:00 on Saturday night.

The company Teollisuuden Voima said it was a malfunction of the turbine, which is a key element in the production of electricity in nuclear power plants. Without them, the heat generated by the fuel rods cannot be converted into electricity.

In August, a day after the start of the test run, the nuclear power plant also suffered a turbine failure.

On the Saturday before the new failure, the capacity of the power plant was increased to 90%.

It is planned that tests of the reactor at full power will begin in early October. Olkiluoto-3 should start regular power generation in December.

The reactor was restarted last night. During the trial run, the capacity will be increased in stages from 60% percent to the full capacity of 1,600 megawatts. The full power trial should begin in October.

It will be recalled that on December 20, the Olkiluoto-3 reactor was launched for the first time. It is considered the most powerful in Europe. This reactor will produce about 15% of all electricity in Finland.

France is also reported to be resuming construction of nuclear reactors for the first time in decades. This is done to reduce dependence on imported energy carriers.
