The government set the task of accumulating 19 billion cubic meters of gas during the heating season, but this turned out to be impossible.
Ukraine will accumulate less gas at the beginning of the heating season than planned, Prime Minister Denys Shmygal admitted at a press conference on Wednesday, September 14, in Kyiv.
According to him, gas reserves are expected to increase from the current 13.2 billion cubic meters in October. m to 14.5-15 billion cubic meters. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers set the task of accumulating 19 billion cubic meters. m.
“But since the situation has changed throughout the summer, difficult discussions are having with NJSC Naftogaz … we approached September, received guarantees from our partners from the United States and northern countries that we can count on in receiving gas both in the 4th and in the 1st blocks. This allowed the Ministry of Energy to lower the accumulation threshold to 15 billion cubic meters,” he said.
In particular, an agreement was reached with the United States on deliveries in the 4th quarter of this year and in the 1st quarter of the next 2 billion cubic meters. m of gas, as well as negotiations are underway with Norway and a consortium of countries to provide additional gas.
Shmygal also said that 2.2 million tons of coal have been accumulated – this is the largest reserve in recent years, and they will increase to 2.5 million tons, which corresponds to the maximum capacity of warehouses.
In addition, Ukrzaliznytsia and the State Forestry Agency are storing firewood, about 1.5 million cubic meters more, so that in October they will reach 7 million cubic meters.
A month ago, Naftogaz said that Ukraine needs $8 billion to reach the 19 billion cubic meters of gas reserves set by the Cabinet of Ministers.
The authorities expect that in the upcoming heating season, gas consumption will decrease by 39.7% (by 7.7 billion cubic meters) compared to last year, at 11.7 billion cubic meters. m.
