A US corporation, which is a major player in the online advertising market, has been accused of market abuse of advertising technology related to coordinating the sale of online advertising space.
As explained by Damien Geradin of the Belgian law firm Geradin Partners, which is involved in the preparation of the case in the EU, due to the anti-competitive behavior of Google, “the local and national media, which play an important role in our society, are suffered an injury for a long time.”
A similar case in the UK against the Competition Appeals Tribunal is due to be filed in October by the law firm Humphries Kerstetter. They claim that Google’s anti-competitive behavior over the years has cost information sites and small businesses an estimated £7 billion.
In the UK, all affected parties will automatically become plaintiffs, while in the EU case, filed in the Netherlands, potential applicants must apply to join the claim on their own.
In its comment, Google only pointed out that its tools help websites find potential audiences. The company called future lawsuits “speculative and opportunistic”, and also promised to “vigorously fight” them when they come.
Recall that in July Russia fined Google $375 million. The fine was imposed for failure to remove materials from YouTube containing “inaccurate information about the course of a special military operation in Ukraine.”
