Farmers choose oilseeds as an alternative to cereals. After all, it is not yet clear how the “grain agreement” will work in the future.
Ukrainian agribusiness is re-adjusting itself to the conditions of the war with Russia and is increasingly dependent on oilseeds. This was said by the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky, DW reported on the eve.
According to the official, farmers are choosing oilseeds as an alternative to cereals. After all, it is not yet clear how the “grain agreement” concluded in July by the UN and Turkey will work in the future. Therefore, farmers are increasingly sowing rapeseed, sunflower and soybeans.
“This year it is possible to sow one million hectares of rapeseed. The area, which, despite occupying part of the country, roughly corresponds to last year. Rapeseed has already been sown in 70% of the area, which indicates that farmers generally sow oilseeds,” said Vysotsky.
He recalled that a memorandum was signed between Ukraine and Poland on the construction of a pipeline that would bring oil from Ukraine to Poland. It should work next year.
“The profit for the export of vegetable oil will be in demand even after the war, because Ukraine is and will remain the world leader in the export of vegetable oil. This is a long-term project that will change the market. The idea is to export vegetable oil from Polish ports to third countries. The planned capacity is up to 2 million tons of oil per year,” added the First Deputy Minister.
On September 9, 392 thousand tons of sunflower seeds were harvested in Ukraine with a yield of 15.6 centners per hectare from 251.4 thousand hectares (5% of the sown area).
Recall that in the 2021/22 marketing year, which ended on August 31, Ukraine updated the sunflower export record – 1.63 million tons. At the same time, the demand for Ukrainian sunflower remains at a high level.
