The full launch of the terminal is scheduled for mid-September, but this week it will receive the first batch of gas for processing.
Two floating units (FSRU) for the regasification of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have arrived at the port of Eemshaven in the north of the Netherlands. They will operate as a terminal called EemsEnergyTerminal, its press office said on Wednesday, September 7th.
The full launch of the terminal is scheduled for mid-September, but this week it will receive the first batch of gas for processing.
EemsEnergyTerminal expects to process 18 batches of liquefied gas by the end of the year.
In turn, Bloomberg reported that the FSRU Golar Igloo and Eemshaven LNG units are being leased for five years. This is the first floating LNG terminal chartered by European states this winter.
FSRUs are usually permanently moored offshore. Tankers carrying liquefied gas transfer it to a plant where it turns into a gaseous state. Such vessels are faster, cheaper and more environmentally friendly compared to land-based installations, but their capacity is lower.
Germany, which previously received most of its gas through pipelines from Russia, is actively investing in such terminals. It charters five FSRUs, with two more leased to private companies. The three ships will begin operating this winter.
Italy, France and the Baltic countries are also planning or exploring the possibility of importing liquefied natural gas through floating terminals.
It will be remembered that from the beginning of 2022, the EU has received more than 40 billion cubic meters of gas in the form of LNG from the United States, which is almost twice as much as the total of the previous year.
It was also reported that the share of Russian gas in EU imports fell four times – up to 9%. Now the main supplier is Norway.
