President Pedro Castillo appoints Curt Burneo Farfan as new president Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF).
Burneo entered the Cabinet following the ratification of Anibal Torres in office and will replace Oscar Graham, who has held the post since February 2022.
The economist becomes the third head of the MEF in the Castillo government, which has been in power for just over a year.
It is worth noting that Burneo has previously indicated that he was offered up to two opportunities to join Council of Ministers.
“I had two attempts to become a state minister. Unfortunately, nothing has changed in terms of how the state is run, so I decided to step aside and not accept the invitation,” Burneo told local media a few months ago.
Trajectory
Burneo graduated as economist from the National University of San Marcos and received a master’s degree from the University of Sao Paulo and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru, as well as a doctorate from the Ramon Lull University – ESADE.
This economist already has previous experience in the ministry, as he headed the ministry of production from July to December 2011 in the government of Ollant Umal.
He previously served Deputy Minister of Finance in the government of Alejandro Toledo from 2001 to 2004, and was also the head of his economic team when he ran in the 2011 elections.
In addition, he was Chairman of the Banco de la Nación from 2001 to 2006 and served as Director of the Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) from 2001 to 2006.
On the other hand, it worked like teacher at Esan University, San Ignacio de Loyola (USIL), San Martin de Porres (USMP) and Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP).
According to PUCP, since January 2012, he has also served as Deputy Executive Director for Peru at the Inter-American Development Bank and has been a financial and economic consultant for the National Service for Natural Areas Protected by the State (SERNANP). National Institute for Quality (INACAL), Industrias Nettalco and others.
