The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCR) announced today that it is introducing new banknotes in denominations of 20 and 50 soles which include modern designs, new motifs and updated security features, as part of their new family of banknotes.
These banknotes pay tribute to the outstanding characters of our literature and history of the 20th century, and also highlight the diversity of our flora and fauna.
These new banknotes will be issued from July 20 this year and will be in circulation simultaneously with the current banknotes of these denominations.
The design was developed by the prestigious British company De La Rue International Limited, which won a design competition organized by the Central Bank, which was attended by the world’s leading banknote manufacturers.
New family of banknotes: who personifies banknotes of 20 and 50 soles?
Banknotes of the new family are distinguished by updated security elements, easily recognizable by the population.
Its theme is centered on 20th-century characters who have had a notable impact on art, literature, history, and science. The topic of biodiversity is also covered, including the motifs of our flora and fauna, for which we have the support of the Ministry of the Environment.
The new family of banknotes has the following motifs:
• S/10: Chabuca granda, vicuña and amancaes flower
• S/20: Jose Maria ArguedasCondor and Flor de la Cantuta
• S/50: Maria Rostvorovskyjaguar and puya raimondi
• S/ 100: Pedro Paulet, shovel-tailed hummingbird and Phragmipedium kovachii orchid
• S/200: Tilsa Tsuchiya, rock rooster and flower of Bella Abankina
It should be noted that since July 22 last year, a new family of banknotes with denominations of 10 and 100 soles has been put into circulation.
José María Arguedas on the new 20 sole note
The predominant color of the 20 sole note is ocher yellow, it is printed on cotton and has the same dimensions as the current notes.

The image of our writer and ethnologist José Maria Arguedas Altamirano (Andahuaylas, 1911 – Lima, 1969), a fundamental figure in the local literature of Peru, is shown. Among his extensive literary works, among others, “Yavar Fiesta”, “Los Ríos Profundos” and “Todas las Sangres” stand out.
On the left side, in a print-free area, there is a watermark depicting the face of Arguedas against a background of light and the denomination in numerals inside a triangle.
In addition, there is an interlaced security thread that changes color from green to blue and shows moving figures as the banknote is rotated slightly back and forth.
In the lower right corner, there is a geometric pattern printed with ink that changes color. As the banknote rotates, this pattern changes from green to blue, showing the effects of movement.
On the right side of the bill, under the denomination in numbers, there is a hidden number corresponding to the denomination of 20, which can be seen by holding the bill tangentially to the light source.
The obverse has embossed imprints that are noticeable to the touch, which are located mainly in the inscription BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ, letter, denomination in numbers and letters and register for the blind, located on the left side edge.
The reverse of the banknote is made in a vertical format and contains images of a condor and Flor de la Cantuta. You can also see the coat of arms and the denomination in numbers and letters in two colors.
The new banknotes also contain security features that are recognized by equipment that identifies and processes cash.
Maria Rostvorovsky Goods on the new 50 sole banknote
The predominant color of the 50 sole note is red, it is printed on cotton and has the same dimensions as the current notes.

The portrait of our historian and explorer of the Andean world, Maria Rostworowski Tovar (Barranco, 1915 – Lima, 2016) is one of her most famous works “History of Tahuantinsuyu”, which explains the rise and apogee of the Inca state.
On the left side, in the area free from printing, there is a watermark, which depicts the face of Rostvorovsky against the background of light and the denomination in numbers inside the triangle. In addition, there is a brown security thread protruding between them, which shows moving figures when the banknote is slightly rotated back and forth.
In the lower right corner, there is a geometric pattern printed with ink that changes color. As the note rotates, this pattern changes from gold to green, showing the effects of movement.
On the right side of the banknote, under the denomination in figures, the number corresponding to the denomination 50 is hidden, which can be seen by placing the banknote tangentially to the light source.
The obverse has embossed imprints that are noticeable to the touch, which are located mainly in the inscription BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ, letter, denomination in numbers and letters and register for the blind, located on the left side edge.
The reverse of the banknote is made in a vertical format and contains images of a jaguar and Puya Raimondi. You can also see the coat of arms and the denomination in numbers and letters in two colors.
The new banknotes also contain security features that are recognized by equipment that identifies and processes cash. (According to Andina)
