Additional volumes of gas will be supplied by Algerian state energy company Sonatrach, whose counterpart is Italian Eni.
It was noted that since the beginning of this year, Algeria has exported 13.9 billion cubic meters of gas to Italy, which is 113% more than the estimated volumes. In total, Algeria plans to supply 19.9 billion cubic meters of gas to Italy by 2022.
It was learned that on Monday an Italian delegation led by Prime Minister Mario Draghi will visit Algiers. It is planned to sign a number of agreements, including in the energy sector.
Recall, on April 12, Italy signed an agreement to increase gas imports from Algeria by 40% over the next two years. Draghi then called the deal a step towards reducing Italy’s reliance on Russia’s gas.
Previously, Italy annually imported approximately 30 billion cubic meters of gas from Russia, covering 40% of the country’s domestic market needs. The country’s authorities intend to replace this volume with supplies from Algeria, Angola, the Republic of Congo and Mozambique.
