Ombudsman issued report No. 220, which indicated that today there are 207 social conflicts that threaten the country’s economic activity. Out of a total of 153 active and 54 latent.
From the list, the organization stated that six conflicts are new and they are found in regions such as Amazonas, Apurimac, Moquegua and others.
What are the new social conflicts?
The Ombudsman reported that one of the new conflicts took place in Amazon, where a dispute arises between citizens and public organizations of Kondorkanka. They are demanding that the regional government change the director of the Local Education Management Office (UGEL) and address the issue of intercultural bilingual education.
The second conflict takes place in Limebetween the Kant Defense Front and a part of the population that requires attention to the pollution caused by the spill of 35 tons of zinc concentrate into the Chillon River.
Meanwhile, in the district of Chalhuahuacho in Apurimac, the peasant communities of Chuicuni and Chile report that the Las Bambas mining company is not fulfilling its obligations and are asking to enter the zone of direct influence bambas. In the case of Chile, they are also demanding a revision of the transfer price of part of their property.
The Ombudsman also warned of a fifth socio-ecological conflict in the province of Generan-Sanchez-Cerro de Moquegua. Here, the Association of Indigenous Peasant Communities asks to stop the San Gabriel mining project.
