Media Group Ukraine will renounce in favor of the state all broadcast and satellite TV channel licenses and print media licenses. Online media activities will also be terminated.
Entrepreneur Rinat Akhmetov announced that his investment company SCM has left the media business. This is stated in the statement of the businessman, published on Monday, July 11.
The SCM owner called this decision “forced”. According to him, this week, Media Group Ukraine will renounce in favor of the state all licenses to broadcast and satellite TV channels and print media licenses in Ukraine. Online media activities will also be terminated.
Akhmetov attributed this decision to the entry into force of the law on the prevention of threats to national security associated with the excessive influence of people with significant economic and political weight in public life (oligarchs).
“As the largest private investor in the Ukrainian economy, I have repeatedly said that I am not, will not, and will not be an oligarch. The short six-month period defined by law for the sale of media assets, and aggression of Russia’s military against Ukraine, do not allow SCM to sell the media business on market terms “, he said.
Akhmetov stressed that since 2000 he has invested more than $ 1.5 billion in his media holding, so it was very difficult for him to decide to leave the media business.
Let us remind, SCM became the largest tax bearer in the conditions of war. From the beginning of 2022, the businesses of Rinat Akhmetov’s group paid 1.2 billion euros in taxes.
It was also reported that SCM will seek compensation from Russia for the losses in all instances.
